Attempts have been made to make a $50 smartphone by Google under their Android One Project with varying degrees of success.

Google isn’t the only one that has made efforts in this direction. In Africa, we’ve seen brands like Tecno, iTel, Nokia, Microsoft, iDroid among others making affordable smartphones.

If smartphone penetration is to increase, we need to see these prices continue to come down so that the majority can afford a smartphone.
