These content curation platforms not only bring you the latest and most popular news on different categories (sport, business, technology, politics, travel etc.), they also bring you trending news as well as local and international happenings which you can manually personalize according to your preference or leave the job to AI to personalize news offerings.
There a number of content curation platforms in Africa but Opera News (developed and operated by Opera ) and Scooper are the most used and most popular. And this feat achieved by both platforms can be attributed to the success of the parent companies in other ventures.
Opera News vs. Scooper: History and Entrance Strategy
Before becoming a standalone news app, Opera News was basically a feature which was incorporated into its Opera Mini browser. As interest in the service spiked to over 100 million active users barely after 1 year of introducing the feature, Opera Software decided to launch the Opera News platform as a standalone news app in 2018. Interestingly, before the official launch of the app, Opera ran a pre-launch test which saw over 100,000 people download the app, crowning the Opera News as the most downloaded news app in Africa at the time.
Upon official launch, Opera introduced Opera News as its first product under its “Africa First” strategy and even got more people to download the app as the company offered enticing referral incentives to users who got their relatives/friends/acquaintances to download the app through their referral links. This strategy raised Opera News’ download numbers to millions in months. As at the time of concocting this article, Opera News boasts of over 10 million downloads.
Basically, it is evident that Opera did its homework right and launched Opera News to feed an hungry audience with growing appetite for improved access to news, trends, and contents.
Scooper, on the other hand, is more of a news app launched to rival Opera News. The platform — formerly known as “ Eaglee News App ” — was re-branded and officially launched by Transsion Holdings in January 2019. Despite having a strong rival (i.e Opera News) to compete with, it is interesting to see that Scooper is making headway irrespective. The success of Scooper can, however, be attributed to some factors which include (but not limited to):
- Novel Features : Scooper’s success can be partly attributed to some standout features (which Opera News lacked) like Live Sport Commentary, Free Football Betting tips, Scooper Coins (which allows users earn as they read news) etc.
- Previous Achievements & Successes : As mentioned earlier, Scooper is a product of Transsion Holdings — the company behind popular smartphone brands like Infinix, Tecno and iTel. Just like Opera also leveraged Opera Mini to pre-test the Opera News service to see if there was a market for it, Transsion also leveraged the success and popularity of its hardware to push the Scooper News App to its target market via old and new Tecno, Infinix, and iTel phones.
Feature Comparison
In terms of popularity and size of active users, Opera is — no doubts — ahead of Scooper. Feature-wise, however, let’s find out who’s doing the most with their apps.
1.Application Size
Presently, on the Google PlayStore, the Opera News app is sized at 9.5MB while Transsion Holding’s Scooper News App has a size of 11MB. The Opera News app is 1.5MB lighter than Scooper, and this is quite surprising because quoting Nancy Nwachukwu’s ( Transsion Holding’s Marketing Lead) words at the launch event of Scooper, I expect it [Scooper] to be lighter than Opera News.
“Users are not at risk of overloading their phone storage because the app is lightweight. Scooper is only available on Android devices and available for download on Google Play Store,” Nancy Nwachukwu noted .
- Registration and Sign-in options
Although you can use both apps without registering, you’d have to sign-up to use certain features on both platforms. Scooper boasts of more sign-in options as users can sign-in using either Facebook, Twitter or Google account. Opera News, on the other hand, supports registration using a Phone number or Facebook account.
- Interface
This is a really tough call to make as both apps have lovely interfaces and are pretty easy to navigate. Choosing the best interface is really subjective. I, however, prefer Opera News’ interface to Scooper. First off, Opera News comes with a “Search bar” through which users/readers can easily find trending news. The search bar even gives news and content suggestions based on top trending searches.
Also, Opera News comes with more content categories and improved personalization. Likewise, users can customize news based on states, regions, and cities of interest and residence. This allows you filter out irrelevance information and focus more on happenings within your localty .
- Supported Country and Languages
While Scooper supports only English in Nigeria, Kenya, and Ghana, Arabic is supported for Egypt users. Opera News, on the other hand, supports over 50 languages in 50 different countries — Benin, Burundi, Chad, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Guinea, Senegal, Republic of the Congo, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria, Madagascar, Rwanda, South Sudan, Morroco, India, Indonesia, Ethopia , Liberia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Zambia, Tanzania, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa etc.
The Future: Who’ll win the race?
The signs are pretty obvious and backed up by data — number of download, in-app features, interface and navigation, active users, supported countries and languages etc. Opera News is way ahead of Scooper and is presently the king of digital content curation in Africa. That said, Opera still hold way more prospect of becoming even bigger than Opera News. Here’s why.

According to several reports and images that have surfaced online, it appears that WhatsApp is testing fingerprint authentication on the instant messaging app for Android, as confirmed by @WABetaInfo on its social media page and a blog post.
There’s no arguing that WhatsApp is the biggest instant messaging application. This feat can be attributed to the many standout features of the platform, one of which is security. End-to-end encryption debuted on WhatsApp two years ago to ensure secure communication and make messages more private (like a face-to-face conversation) and now, Fingerprint authentication is coming to further up the security and privacy of messages and data on the app.
About how the feature will be implemented, WABetaInfo reports that when the feature is finally pushed as an update to the app, users will be able to toggle on/off fingerprint (as shown below) in a new “ Authentication ” pane under the Privacy menu of the app. The fingerprint authentication option is expected to be located under the “ Read Receipts “. option
Source; @WABetaInfo
Once enabled, WhatsApp will prompt you to place your finger on your fingerprint sensor for authentication whenever you open the app. And irrespective of where or how you try to get into the app (perhaps from your phone’s notification tray, from other applications, or be it from the app icon itself0 WhatsApp will request for your fingerprint — long as you have the feature is activated and your device is fingerprint-enabled. That said, the feature will lock the entire app, not specific chats.
As an icing on the cake, WABetaInfo also reports that users will be able to use their default phone credentials (like PIN, password or Facial recognition perhaps) to open WhatsApp in lieu of using fingerprint. I, however, think fingerprint is enough though as it is the easiest and fastest form of smartphone biometric authentication . However, using other device credentials comes in handy should WhatsApp not recognize your print or your phone’s fingerprint sensor goes faulty.
When WhatsApp fingerprint authentication officially roll out?
At the moment, the source reports that the feature is still much in its early developmental stages. Furthermore, the feature was recently pushed as an update to the version 2.19.3 of the WhatsApp Beta app through Google Play Store’s Beta testing program immediately after the company resumed from Christmas break. So this is a totally new development which might take time to fully manifest on the app. To add, WhatsApp is said to be making this feature for Android phones running the Marshmallow OS or newer.
Interestingly, in the next update that we’d be getting from the Play Store, fingerprint authentication might not be the only new feature WhatsApp has in store for users. The company is also reportedly working on an “ Audio Picker ” that will allow users play and preview audio files before sending them.
WhatsApp beta for Android 2.19.1: WhatsApp is working on a new redesigned section to send audio files to contacts. It supports audio preview and image preview of the audio file (if available). Max 30 audio messages at a time. FEATURE AVAILABLE IN FUTURE! pic.twitter.com/5hCIavpCcU — WABetaInfo (@WABetaInfo) January 7, 2019
The new in-development audio picker will allow users select and send up to 30 audio files simultaneously. The fingerprint authentication, audio picker, as well as other features are set to hit WhatsApp for Android at an unspecified date in the future. Of course, these features will be available for iOS device too but no date is in view.
