The Kenyan Finance Act 2018 that was signed on 21-Sep-18 was a controversial one for many reasons. For one, people only focused on the price of fuel that was going to increase by 8%. Kwese Play is an upcoming device, powered by Roku, which works via the internet and enables you to watch television as well as any other video on demand services. It is a product independent of the Kwese decoder though one can use both simultaneously. Safaricom recently unveiled the M-PESA GlobalPay Cards, a virtual VISA Card available via the M-PESA app that allows users to use the mobile money platform to pay for goods and services online. Virtual Cards aren’t anything new and many of the available fintechs in Africa offer this feature in some shape or form. Flutterwave , Eversend and many other do this already. Recently, HMD Global introduced their latest lineup of Android-powered Nokia smartphones into the Kenyan market. The three devices consist of the entry-level Nokia 1, mid-range Nokia 6 (Second Generation) and near flagship, Nokia 7 Plus. The trio run the latest version of Android, which is Oreo. With the Nokia 1 specifically running Android Oreo (Go Edition), which is a toned down version of Android built specifically for devices with 1GB RAM or less....

So finally!! Months after Nokia made a comeback at MWC in Barcelona early this year, HMD Global, the company with the rights to make and sell Nokia phones made available their 3 new Android smartphones in Kenya. The phones are positioned for the mid-range price segment of the market. It will be interesting to see how these Nokia phones will fair in a market that is almost saturated with Chinese phones, the likes of Tecno, Oppo, and Infinix that offer so much for so little....

Following over a year after its launch, OPay received lots of funding especially from Chinese investors which have been quite active in the African startup scene recently. OPay has since then been able to diversify into transport (ORide, OTrike , OBus ), food delivery (OFood) and services. In the just-completed Series B round, the Fintech startup was able to raise a total of $120 million from nine Chinese investors according to reports from Techcrunch ....

I ran into this issue yesterday Morning. I could access other websites on Chrome and Firefox on Android, but to my dismay I couldn’t access the same websites from Opera Mini. And I am talking about services that are not part of the 50+ OTT services affected by the new Taxes. MTN confirmed to me via a tweet that they are indeed blocking the whole Opera browser. However, no explanation was given as to why Uganda’s biggest mobile network was doing this while Airtel, Africell and other services providers were not censoring the browser....

Reports coming in indicate that Opera Software, the makers of the Opera browser (Opera, Opera Mobile, OperaMini) has accepted a $1.2 billion takeover by a Chinese consortium led by Golden Brick Silk Road Equity Investment Fund in what Opera says is a strategic move to enter the elusive Chinese market.The fund is controlled by Beijing Kunlun Tech Co., Qihoo 360 and Yonglian Investment Of the consortium: Beijing Kunlun Tech is an Online Games development and distribution company known for introducing Rovio’s Angry Birds to China....
